Key Benefits

48V

The amperage of each LED module in combination with the wire thickness, defines the LED string length. For example, a 1W 12V module has a current of 0,08A. If you use a cable of 22AWG, it is rated at a maximum of 5A. Therefore, you can power a maximum of 5A / 0,08 = 62 LED modules. So, if you power more than 62 LED modules, you overpower the cable, you do not comply with regulations and you take the risks of causing melting cables and fire.

Long String Lengths

The amperage of each LED module in combination with the wire thickness, defines the LED string length. For example, a 1W 12V module has a current of 0,08A. If you use a cable of 22AWG, it is rated at a maximum of 5A. Therefore, you can power a maximum of 5A / 0,08 = 62 LED modules. So, if you power more than 62 LED modules, you overpower the cable, you do not comply with regulations and you take the risks of causing melting cables and fire.

According to regulation, you need to fuse every string length it the power supply can provide more current than the maximum current of the cable. So for example: of you need to power 200 LEDs of 1W, you might take a 240W PSU. So you need to create 200/62 = 4 separate strings. According to regulation, you need to fuse each string or you have to connect each string at a separate 60W PSU.

The same 1W module @ 48V, has a current of 0,02A. So, when using a 22AWG, a maximum of 5 / 0,02 = 250 LED modules can be powered. So basically, without fusing, you can connect 250 LED modules @ 1 250W PSU.

So the Stella offers 120 modules / string. Comparable LED modules at 12V allow 3-4x less LED modules in one string. In effect, wiring up these installations takes much more time, is more expensive and is much more complex.

Low Energy Costs

In order to prevent LEDs running (extremely) warm and ensuring their lifetime, current control is applied in most LEDs.

As we operate @ 48V and our current control consumes 1,5V, we supply 46,5V to the LED. Our efficiency is therefore 46,5V / 48V = 97%. Furthermore, as our LED operates at 48V, there are no further losses.

If you take a 12V module, the current control typically also consumes 1,5V. Therefore the efficiency is at it’s best 10,5V / 12V = 87%. Furthermore, as these LEDs typically operate at 3,2V, an LED module with 2 LEDs consumes 2x 3,2 = 6,4V. Typically, the other 10,5 – 6,4 = 4,1V are being removed by a resistor, burning away the power. Therefore, these leds run 6,4 / 12V = 53% efficiency.

The efficiency of 12V LEDs differs, based on the design, but is typically 20% lower compared to a 48V LED module. As we use modern LEDs with a industry leading efficiency of 147lm/W and we use 97% of the energy provided to the LED, we can claim that typically we have an LED which is >50% more energy efficient than most competing LED modules, resulting in low energy costs when using the Stella.

Low Cost Price

If you compare LEDs by it’s total costs of ownership (TCO), you notice that the Stella has a low cost price:

Traditional LEDs          vs     Stella
– Buying cost price: Buying new leds (most have a 5 year warranty) vs Stella (10 years warranty)
– Installation costs: Placement of lots of LEDs and creating several LED strings vs placing less LEDs and a minimum amount of LED strings
– Energy costs: 10 year energy costs
– Replacement costs: Replacing LEDs after 5-8 years vs replacing LEDs after 15+ years

Especially end users are very sensitive to low energy costs and TCO.

If we make this calculation, the Stella even can compete with LEDs which are supplied free.

Patented Temperature Control

In essence, we designed a patented LED control that first measures LED temperature at each individual LED die within each LED module.

If the temperature of the LED die becomes too high, the lifetime drops dramatically and therefore we limit the current flowing to the LED, preventing the LED to run warm. In this way, we prevent overheating of the LED and can ensure 10 years warranty. This ideal for harsh environments like Australia or Dubai.

This is a unique feature which we haven’t seen incorporated in any other LED module in the market. Basically, due to this feature, we can sell the LED with lifetime warranty. However, as people will not believe this, we limited the warranty to 10 years, making it easier to understand for our customers.
